You follow the old Iron Mountain Trail that was used many years ago for hauling ore out of the mines. To begin this hike, drive 3 miles south of Quinn’s to Cascade Campground. From May 23rd to September 30th, the campground is open to vehicles. Otherwise, you can park at the gate and walk in. Built on the rail bed commonly known as the Milwaukee Road, the trail includes 10 tunnels, and traverses 7 steel trestles. As an old rail bed, the trail never exceeds its original 2% grade. Also, a shuttle bus service allows trail users to ride the route of the Hiawatha entirely downhill. This trail will eventually enter Montana and continue to St. Regis at I-90 west of Lookout Pass (take Taft exit, #5). For more information, call them at 208-744-1301. One of the tunnels is almost two miles long, and unlit! Flashlights are recommended.
